Polders games
Play, explore and discover everything about polders and sea levels. Can you keep the Netherlands dry? The Polder Games show in a fun and interactive way how the Dutch have been living with water for centuries and why that story is still important today.
Pump water, cross stepping stones and learn about sea level
Close to the windmill, you'll find the Polder Games. Walk across the stepping stones, pull yourself across the water on a raft and pump water away, just like in a real Dutch polder. Every activity demonstrates a different aspect of water management, from keeping water out to pumping it away into lower canals.
As you play, you'll discover how the Netherlands has battled water for centuries and why polders are so important to much of the country. For children who have recently learned about sea levels and dikes at school, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience those lessons in a fun, hands-on way.
Play with a meaningful lesson
What makes the Polder Games so special is that they're not just fun, they also tell the story of the Netherlands. While children enthusiastically pump water or balance across the stepping stones, they learn, without even realising it, how important good water management is. For parents, it's a great opportunity to talk together about dikes, canals, pumping stations and why such a large part of the Netherlands lies below sea level.
How do you explain a polder to children?
A polder is an area of land that lies below sea level and is kept dry using dikes, canals and pumps. At the Polder Games in Adventure Farm Molenwaard, children discover how this works by pumping water themselves and crossing the stepping stones.
