Alpacas
We’ve recently welcomed a special new species to the farm: alpacas! These friendly and curious animals are native to the Andes Mountains in South America and are known for their soft fleece and gentle nature.
What are Alpacas?
Alpacas belong to the camelid family, just like llamas, but are smaller and have a gentler appearance. They naturally live in groups and enjoy being with other alpacas. Alpacas are curious, intelligent and communicate a lot through body language and soft sounds.
Our Alpaca Family
There are currently four alpacas living on the farm:
- Three adult alpacas
- One cria
A cria is the name for a young alpaca. We’re also expecting a second cria within a few weeks, which is due to be born around August. This means our herd will consist of five alpacas this summer.
CAN I FEED THE ALPACAS?
Although our alpacas will probably come over to have a curious look at you, they are fed exclusively by our animal keepers. This is because their sensitive digestive systems require a special diet. We therefore ask visitors not to feed the alpacas.
Of course, you’re more than welcome to admire them to your heart’s content and take a lovely photo!
